NCN 14 / Derwent Walk to Tanfield Railway Path

This route involves a very steep and in parts rocky climb up from the River Derwent to Fellside Road where the gradient eases slightly until the Public House where the route begins to level.
The first part of Clockburn Lonnen is a rough cobbled ancient pack horse route.

From NCN 14
Cross the River Derwent on the Butterfly Bridge and pass under the Derwent Walk.

From Derwent Walk
Descend down to join track from the Butterfly Bridge.

Continue steeply up Clockburn Lonnen to Fellside Road - turn right and just before public house turn left along a lane.

Follow this lane then farm track along the field edges - passing through Riding Barns Farm - pass around edge of housing to The Cresent and the A692 road at Sunniside.

Turn right then after a short distance turn left onto path leading towards Sunniside Station and join the Tanfield Railway Path.
