The
Ruins of Friar's Goose Pumping Engine

The
stone ruins that can be seen are the remains of the Friars Goose Pumping
Engine
built in the early 19th. century for pumping water from the coal mines
below.
Every pump stroke lifted about 195 galls (800 Ltrs).
At one stroke every 10 seconds this removed over 1,500,00 gallons (6300
tonnes) / day.
The engine was built by Robert Stephenson.
