River Derwent to Wylam Bridge

Derwent Junction
The section from River Derwent to Wylam Staion is now National Cycle Network - Route 141
From the 3-way junction pass under the railway bridge and turn left up river along a wide red gravel track. Cross over the boat launching slipway - through barrier - passing Derwenthaugh Marina (R) to join access road and follow around to signed junction.

Bear left up ramp and cross over Scotswood Bridge on shared use pathway and cross
Scotswood Road on
the large foot / cycle bridge to Millennium Milepost at 5-way junction.

Bear left up river to Newburn Bridge |

Bear right down river to Newcastle

Continue ahead on road passing under Scotswood Bridge to join riverbank path passing under the disused Scotswood Rail Bridge and Blaydon Bridge A1(T).
At Sea Cadet hut bear left and join Patterson Street - ahead into Factory Lane through Blaydon Haughs Industrial Estate.
BEWARE HGV's ENTERING / LEAVING FACTORIES ALONG THESE ROADS.
Before level crossing turn right up to end of road - through barrier and ahead on path between railway line (L) and River Tyne (R).
Turn left under railway then right up stony track to B6317 road and right onto shared use path.

A new riverside route forNCN 141 Keelmans Way is now under construction. The first phase will see a new track between the railway and the Tyne from Blaydon Burn to then pass through the new housing development. Later when new riverside promenade is completed it will follow the riverside all the way to Newburn Bridge. DUE TO OPEN BY SUMMER 2013.
This shared use path (SUP) is narrow in places but avoids the busy B6317 road.
Continue on SUP up to traffic lights - turn right on road and downhill over level crossing to bend.
Choice of route
Off road via riverbank to Newburn Bridge (signed)
Continue straight ahead down a disused road then follow narrow path to riverbank - left up stream on riverside path to pass UNDER Newburn Bridge and ahead through Ryton Willows Nature Reserve.
For link to NCN 72 on north bank bear left up ramp, sharp right over bridge to NCN 72.
On Road to Newburn Bridge. (un-signed)
Follow road around to left and ahead to the traffic lights at Newburn Bridge, bear left down ramp on west side of road and follow riverbank path up river passing through the Ryton Willows Nature Reserve (note there are awkward gates at each end).path

Turn right onto pathway on down stream side of bridge and cross river.

Note: a new riverside route UNDER Newburn Bridge is now in use.

Continue ahead left and right passing a few houses (there used to be a ferry across the river here) and bear right to follow path alongside railway (L) then between Golf Course and river.
The Old Ryton Ferry
Continue on path until back next to the rail line again - through barriers into Wylam Station Car Park and the end of the Keelman's Way.
