The starting point for Tanfield Railpath is at the junction of Clockmill Road and Derwent Water Road where it connects end on with the Teams Cycleway from Staithes South Bank development and the Keelmans Way NCN 14.
The signed route follows Forge Road and passes under rail bridge where it turns right on path to Rochester Gardens. Here the signs guide up the spiral ramp and over the foot/cycle bridge to cross over the very busy A1(T) Western Bypass road.
From here the route signs guide you to the foot of the Lobby Hill Incline.
After crossing A1(T) road bear left and then right (easy to miss) between trees to climb up the 1:20 Lobley Hill Incline.
At top of incline pass church (L) and cross B6317 Whickham Highway.

Pass the Gateshead Central Nurseries (R), Emmanuel College (L), a wide grassed area (L) and into Watergate Country park to A692 crossing.
(turn right before road crossing for Cross Lane Cycleway to MetroCentre)

Cross over A692 to begin steep climb uphill to Street Gate , where the gradient eases - cross road and ahead to cross A6076 road.
Join the off road path at Sunniside Station and follow to the car park at the Tanfield Railway site at Marley Hill.
Here you connect to the Bowes Railway Path
