Team Colliery Waggonway

This cycle route follows for most of its length the track bed of the colliery line that ran from the coal mines at Ravensworth Park (Team Valley) to the coal staithes at Pelaw Main on the R. Tyne.
Due to the terrain between these two points rope haulage and self acting inclines had to be used.

In later years this line formed part of the Bowes railway system and was connected to it at Wrekenton when the Whitehills incline down to the Tyne was closed.

The majority of the route is off-road following the old inclines except through Whitehills where it is on-road as the track bed has been built over here.

There is a steady climb up from the Tyne to Whitehills, then a short plateau before descending steeply in to Team Valley.

The cycleway which is about 5.5 miles in length and passes close to the Angel of the North.
