Durham Road - Old and New

Two on road routes from the Town Centre out to Birtley on the New Durham Road A167 via Low Fell and to Wrekenton on the Old Durham Road B1296 via Sheriff's Hill and High Fell

A167 New Durham Road

A relatively flat route until A1(T) road then descends to Birtley.

From the large roundabout at the southern end of the Gateshead Highway this cycle route is all on-road using a mixture of cycle / bus lanes and has advanced stop lines at the Traffic signaled junctions.

Passes the Angel of the North at Eighton and uses an off-road path to negotiate the large roundabout at A1(T) Eighton Banks to continue on road to Birtley.

Links with Team Colliery Waggonway near Angel of the North and the Bowes Railway Path just south of A1(T) road.

B61296 Old Durham Road
A more hilly route that climbs up to Sheriff Hill then undulates to Wrekenton.

All on-road using cycle / bus lanes with advanced stop lines at Traffic signaled junctions.

Passes close to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital at High Fell.

At Wrekenton an advisory route continues down Eighton Bank to join with the A167 cycle route to Birtley.

Links with Teams Colliery Waggonway at Wrekenton and the
Sea to Sea - NCN 7 just south of the district boundary at Vigo Lane.
