Derby to Rosliston Forestry Centre This ride is around 50 miles return trip, so it may be considered a 'day ride' for, on reaching the Forestry Centre there is an excellent cafe. For those who truly energetic, there are walking/cycling paths for which maps may be collected from reception. See the website Rosliston Forestry Centre. The ride takes place entirely on Route 54 from Derby Town Centre excepting for the last few miles into Rosliston. Follow this route 54 from town and along the railway track through Mickleover and into Etwall, do not miss the left turn away from the main road in Etwall. Continue on to Egginton, following the main Road through Egginton and eventually turning right and riding on the footpath alongside the A38 in order to cross the river Trent. Within 1 mile the footpath raises into a typical major road island junction. Here it is important that the Yellow R54 signs are followed turning right into Stretton. (See Fig.1). Do not follow the prominent Blue sign 'R54' towards Burton for this route is as yet incomplete. In Stretton, turn Left along with the route and ride through the village. Here, as the road begins to enter Burton, there is a cyclepath on the left. take this path for a short distance and soon turn away (Fig. 2) to join the canal towpath and ride beneath the road. Prepare to turn left once again, leaving the canal towpath, for the tarmacadum cycle path runs parallel to the canal for several miles but elevated above it. A bridge eventually crosses the canal into the park at Shobnal. Follow the path through the park which joins a small road leading from the Park entrance into the car park (Fig. 3). Follow this road to the left until it joins with the B5017. Turn right here and continue down the road for a few hundred yards turning left beside the Albion hotel (Fig. 4). You now have nearly three miles of good farmtrack before emerging onto the Tattenhill/Branston road. On leaving this track cycle straight on to Tattenhill and turn left along with Route 54 to Barton-under-Needlewood. At Barton-under-Needlewood you will leave the Route 54 at the first road junction. Here turning Left to take the B5016 to Walton-on-Trent. This road crosses the A38 Via two Road Islands and then crosses the river by a single track bridge. Fortunately the road carries very little traffic. From Walton-on-Trent the route to Rosliston Forestry Centre is clearly signposted. On the return journey, it is best to remember to take the right turn before entering Rosliston. you are then on a 'follow your nose' to connect once again with route 54 back to Derby.
