Local Interest


Here are presented a few local rides to places of interest which you may wish to explore, All distances are approximate and taken from the start point. (Exeter Bridge in Derby town centre).

Eating out. Calke, Kedleston and Elvaston each has a restaurant attached, and there is a possible tea stop at Melbourne Craft Centre (By the church) on the way to Calke.


Kedleston Hall. About 13 miles round trip.

National Trust Property

Built 1765 by Lord Curzon. The interior is very well preserved. Artifacts from the days of the Raj. Try the attractive 'long walk' (about 2.5 miles) through the grounds.

No cycle racks but has Victorian Iron Railings!

Route: Cycle through Allestree towards Western Underwood, take the left turn towards Kedleston Village. Entrance to the Hall on the left.. A moderate ride which includes one (long but easy) hill Do not attempt to take the busy Ashbourne Road.


Calke Abbey. About 28 miles round trip

National Trust Property

Originaly owned by eccentric English gentry this house is a must, large grounds with a part devoted to a garden of the period .

No cycle racks but plenty of secure bits to lock up to.

Route: Take Route 6 to Kings Newton, Turn off and ride threough Melbourne.. A moderate but safe ride, the last three miles are a long undulating climb out of the Trent Valley. The entrance is on A514 at Ticknall.


Elvaston Park About 12 miles round trip

Derby Council Owned

Only the Gardens and tea shop are open to the public. Entrance is free by cycle.
Plenty of wildlife to interest children. There is a cycle ride around the Park.

Has Cycle Racks in main area.

Route: Take the Route 6 towards Nottingham, an easy ride beside the river. Leave the Route 6 and turn right on meeting the B5010. The entrance is less than a mile down the road.


Derby Industrial Museum less than one mile ride

Derby Council Owned

Entrance is free. Different exhibitions.but always a Railway Exhibition and Exhibits of famous Rolls Royce Aircraft Engines.
Good for all boys up to 70 years.

Route: Follow the cycle path a half mile upstream beside the river from Exeter Bridge.


Pickfords House About One Mile from town centre.

Derby Council Owned.


Exhibitions of family lifestyles and clothing from the 1700's placed in a house setting of the period.


Entrance is free.and it is a worthy visit.

Route: Follow route 54 to Friargate.Pickfords house is on the right. Cycle racks can be found in Friargate,
(the otherside of the junction with Stafford Street, about 25 Yds).
