SUSTRANS

Sustrans - the sustainable transport charity - works on practical projects to encourage people to walk, cycle and use public transport in order to reduce motor traffic and its adverse effects. 5000 miles of their flagship project, the National Cycle Network, were officially opened in June 2000,we are now at 10,000 miles (2005). As well as the National Cycle Network, Sustrans is working on Safe Routes to Schools, Safe Routes to Stations and other practical responses to the transport and environmental challenges.

Sustrans' work relies on the generous donations and monthly standing orders of 40,000 Supporters, also the support of charitable trusts, companies, the Bicycle Association, National Lottery and local authority programmes


THE NATIONAL CYCLE NETWORK

The National Cycle Network is a comprehensive network of safe and attractive places to cycle throughout the UK. 10,000 miles are now completioned., one third of which is on traffic-free paths, the rest will follow quiet lanes or traffic- calmed roads. It is co-ordinated by the charity Sustrans, with the generous support of over 450 local authorities and other partners. For more information on routes in your area, contact:

SUSTRANS VOLUNTEER RANGERS

The National Cycle Network is maintained with the help of over 1600 Volunteer Rangers, funded by the Community Fund. Each Rangers looks after a small section of route, picking up litter, cutting back vegetation, checking that signs haven't been pinched, and occasionally organising rides.
