Later when any diversions are in place this page will contain maps and updated guide notes.

NCN 72 - Ravenglass to Workington - Mile 30.2
Now fully open without any reported problems.

NCN 72 - Workington
Large areas of the riverbanks have been closed off for safety reasons along with local footpath network.
Due to the collapse of the Navvies Footbridge the cycle route is barricaded off just after you go through the underpass next to the bingo hall at Mile 30.2
To reach the temporary footbridge a diversion will have to be followed - at present this is NOT signed.
NOTE:- Parts of this diversion will have to be WALKED.
The t
emporary footbridge constructed by the Army is now OPEN
This is the ONLY way to cross the River Derwent at Workington.

CYCLING IS NOT PERMITTED ON THIS FOOTBRIDGE
PLEASE WALK ACROSS THIS FOOTBRIDGE
An "on the spot" fine of £30 will result if you ride across !!!

A suitable diversion from NCN 72 to the temporary footbridge is now possible on both banks of the R. Derwent.

Click HERE for maps and guide notes for north & southbound diversions routes.

The diversion routes are likely to be subject to change as damaged areas are re-opened - updates will be posted as soon as possible when changes occur.

15/12/2009 - Cumbria County Council announce a temporary road bridge will be built to be in use by late Spring - this will be a 2-way road deck suitable for 42 tonne HGV's with a separate pedestrian / cycle path. This will be built somewhere in between the site of the Northside Bridge (collapsed) and Calva Bridge (damaged beyond repair) and will remain in use until a permanent replacement road bridge can be built which will take up to 2 years.

ALTERNATIVE CROSSING OVER THE RIVER DERWENT
Use the FREE train service between Workington and the temporary station at Workington North.
This will be free until May 2010. From Workington North follow the cycle path for 100 yds to rejoin NCN 72.

NCN 72 - Mile 31.5 onwards to Carlisle / Brampton
