The routes range from four to 20 miles and are aimed at families and those of average fitness, with each route graded as easy, moderate or a challenge.
The free guides are available from Tourist Information Centres in Whitehaven, Carlisle, Haltwhistle, Hexham and Newcastle from the end of June or by calling the Hadrian’ Wall information line on 01434 322002.
The routes are also made up of a maze of quiet roads, cycle paths and other tracks to create mainly circular routes that are as safe and attractive as possible. We hope both visitors and residents will try out the routes.
Not only will cyclists discover fascinating Roman sites, but they will also wind their way through a diverse range of other historic and modern attractions all set amidst some of Britain’s most stunning and varied natural scenery.
The guides provide, easy-to-understand directions, details of where to stop for refreshments and toilets, public transport links and nuggets of information regarding places of interest to look out for and visit along the route. There are handy lists of Tourist Information Centres, cycle shops, repair and hire centres along the way and each pack comes in a plastic wallet to ensure the guides remain clean and dry while in use.
Some of the routes link with the bicycle-carrying Hadrian’s Wall Bus (service AD 122) as well as the Tyne Valley and Cumbrian Coast line train services.
