Current known diversions / closures
7th March 2008

"Network Rail has commissioned Carillion to carry out repairs to the viaduct spanning the River Calder, South of Sellafield Station.

The work started on Thursday 7 February 2008 and is due to conclude at the end of April.

A two metre access will be maintained around the back of the compound to allow pedestrians access to use the footbridge.

There will be four planned closures of the footpath during the works as
follows:

18:30 Saturday 8 March to 07:25 Monday 10 March 2008.
CLOSED all day Sunday 9th

18:30 Saturday 15 March to 07:25 Monday 17 March 2008.
CLOSED all day Sunday 21st.
18:30 Thursday 20 March to 07:00 Tuesday 25 March 2008.
CLOSED - Good Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Easter Monday
18:30 Saturday 29 March to 07:25 Monday 31 March 2008.
CLOSED all day Sunday 30th.

The closure is planned to extend from Sellafield Station, through to a point approximately 50m south of the viaduct, and will include the footbridge over R. Caldar and the footpath/cycle path that crosses beneath the railway viaduct.

As part of the work Carillion are preparing a satellite compound adjacent to the sea pipeline compound, opposite main gate, to service the work down at the station area.

Throughout the duration of the work there will be a noticeable increase in heavy traffic in the area of the satellite compound and the station area.

The satellite compound area will be returned to a greenfield site on completion of the work.

The general helpline number for Network Rail is 08457 11 41 41."

First closure this weekend! They are also giving out warnings that trains will be stopped over Easter Weekend, which will be great for the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway. I would assume that there will be quite a few people wanting to ride the route that weekend as well.

This means there will be no trains to Ravenglass at Easter.

Detour:-
As per alternative route shown on Hadrian's Cycleway map via Sellafield Visitors Centre, between Seascale (mile 7.0) and Beckermet (mile 11.4).
