Introduction to Guide Notes

 





















This Guide provides advice and information about
Hadrian's Cycleway
as shown on the new Sustrans route map NN72.

It is recommended you obtain a copy of this map
before attempting the route - this is available from
The Sustrans Shop

This map uses three panels at a scale of
1:100,000 and shows the route between
Ravenglass and South Shields,
with an alternative finish at
Tynemouth

The guide notes have been split into three sections
corresponding to the map panels.

Each section contains a general description
of the route as shown on each panel plus specific
advice, notes etc. with reference mile point.

Links are included where required for a more
detailed description with sketch maps.
This applies in particular to the Tyneside area
where the route can be difficult to follow.

Links are included to give information about
the various towns and places of interest,
landmarks, the Roman sites found
along Hadrian's Cycleway.

Miles and distances are as shown on the map
i.e. West to East - 0 to 174 miles.

Although the route is generally ridden from
Ravenglass to South Shields or Tynemouth
guide notes are provided in both directions.

and click the required direction arrow.

Hadrian's Cycleway is the only long distance cycle route in the UK
to be wholly within a World Heriatge Site
"Hadrian's Roman Frontier"

Many important Roman sites and museums are passed along Hadrian's Cycleway
and shorts links are possible to visit other sites on the Hadrian's Wall.
These are shown on the map and indicated in the guide notes.

Signage along the route can be variable and is dependent on the local authority area you are in.

Ravenglass to Arbeia So. Shields / Tynemouth
