Following the collapse and damage to road bridges over the River Derwent and the collapse of the Navvies foot bridge used by NCN 72 Hadrian's Cycleway, the Army have constructed a temporary foot bridge upstream of the damaged Calva A596 road bridge. This will allow NCN 72 - Hadrian's Cycleway to cross the river. THE DIVERSION ROUTES HAS NOW BEEN SIGNED The original route via the Navvies Footbridge is blocked off due top the collapse of the bridge. NORTHBOUND DIVERSION :- Just after the underpass at mile 30.3 bear left on the road and almost immediatley bear left up the a narrow pedestrian zig zag ramp to Brow Top. At top of ramp bear left onto Brow Top to sharp right hand bend in road - keep straight ahead and follow a narrow lane/path to junction with Bridge Street opposite the Magistrates Court.
On north bank, turn left and follow new stone path to the roundabout at the north end of Calva Bridge. NOTE:- the A596 is now ONE WAY eastbound only Follow either footway or road around the roundabout clockwise to join the footway alongside the A596 road. SOUTHBOUND DIVERSION :- After passing through the Hagworm Wriggle gate and crossing the bridge over the A596 road turn left, down new link path to the A596 road, bear right and follow footway to the Calva Roundabout
Follow road through underpass to rejoin NCN 72 - Hadrian's Cycleway south to Workington and Raveneglass. 16/12/2009 Cumbria County Council announce that a temporary road bridge will be constructed and will be in use by late Spring 2010. This will cross the river somewhere in between the collapsed Northside Bridge and the condemmed Calva Bridge. This temporary bridge will be designed to carry 2 way vehicle traffic up to 42 tonne HGVs and will also have a pedestrian / cycle path across it, which will allow a shorter diversion route for NCN 72 to be established.
