Looking across the River Tyne from Hadrian's Cycleway - August 9th 2003 The Sage Music Centre - opened on Dec. 17th 2004 - comes into view on the south bank of the River Tyne as you pass below the Tyne Bridge. The glass and steel roof covers three halls with a concourse in front overlooking the river. The stunning £70 million Norman Foster provides for all kinds of music. It includes: a 1700 seat hall, a flexible 4-500 seat hall, the Northern Rock Foundation Hall for rehearsal, performance and education, a high-tech music information resource centre run by Gateshead Libraries, Arts and Information and housed in the Joan and Margaret Halbert Space, The Barbour Room provides a very special space for entertainment and events for up to 300 people, and, wrapping around the front and sides of the building a spectacular glazed concourse providing unrivalled views of the vibrant cityscape. The powerhouse for our focus on Music Education and Community Music is the 25 room Music Education Centre housing activities which are replicated in our education and community programme throughout the north of England.
