The River Tyne Entrance Piers

Constructed by the Tyne Improvement Commission to protect
the river entrance, improve and deepen the navigable channel.

The North and South Piers were began in 1854, and completed in 1895, but during
a severe storm in 1887 the North Pier was breached, and the central section washed away.

A completely new section on a new alignment had to be designed and built which was not
finally completed until 1909. The remains of the original pier can still be seen at low tides.

A painted rendered ashlar lighthouse with glass lantern stands at the end of the pier.
