Willington Viaduct

NCN 72 looking Eastbound

NCN 72 Looking Westbound

Designed by Benjamin Green in 1838 for the Newcastle and North Shields Railway

The viaduct is 1,050 feet long, 76 feet high with 7 segmental arches each of 120 feet span.

It was originally constructed in laminated timber- each arch being made from
14 layers of 22" x 3-1/2" timbers held together by trenails and built by Messr. Robson.

In 1869 it was replaced by iron arches to a similar pattern by the Weardale Iron & Coal Company.

Today it is still in use carrying the Tyne & Wear Metro system.

A similar bridge crosses the Ouse Burn in Newcastle.
