History
Doug Ridgway was appointed Liaison Ranger for Hadrian's Way - NCR 72 between Tynemouth and Newcastle in November 2001 and was asked by Sustrans to set up a Ranger Group.
The inaugral meeting was held on January 29th. 2002, in atrocious weather conditions, at the Bridge Hotel Newcastle, subsequently to be our usual meeting place.
Those present were Doug Ridgway, Phil Goldblat, Gareth Kane, and Chris Owens - two others failed to arrive due to severe transport problems that evening and a further meeting was held later.
Three original Rangers still ride the range, Doug, Phil and Gareth.
Over the intervening years the group has expanded further and further up river on route NCR 72 and also taken in several other National & Regional cycle routes to the extent that separate Liaison Rangers were appointed to look after different route sections but with the overall aim of working together as a team as required.
Eventually six Liaison Rangers plus many Rangers came together to form a new super group.
After a competition which Phil won, the new name of STARS - Sustrans Tyne Area Rangers was decided upon. This enlarged group was to led by Doug Ridgway as overall leader until July 2007 when Doug decided to step down as leader and revert to Liaison Ranger role again but still as part of the STARS group which in future will be run as a co-opertative with various Liason Rangers taking on more specific tasks.
Doug maintains the New STARS web site and holds the stock of tools. |
