Saturday 13th Work Day at Benton Way - NCN 72 In glorious weather 14 rangers, including several new faces, cleaned up the cycle track between Benton Way Bridge and the large sign panel. A total of 100m of track had the grass turves cut back to the pin kerb, all over hanging branches removed with thorn and rose bushes cut down to ground level 2m clear from edge of the track. A huge amount of litter was collected along with an amazing array of rubbish, beer glasses, parts from the old ship yards, a winch, a CD player and a shovel head. Two huge piles of cuttings were ammassed ready for the council to dispose
of on Monday.
We had many comments from the passing public of appreciation for the work we were doing.
A full report with more images will appear later.

Michelle’s Ride - Sunday 23rd May 2010
A family fun day cycling and walking along the beautiful Northumberland Coast
This new event is being held in memory of Michelle Turnbull, an inspirational colleague and great advocate of walking and cycling who enjoyed the beauty of the Northumberland Coast. Sadly, Michelle died of cancer in May 2009.
The event will be centred around Druridge Bay Country Park, near Amble on the beautiful Northumberland coast. It is aimed at young people and families but offers the opportunity for anyone to take part. It is organised by the transport charity Sustrans and supported by Northumberland County Council and Public Health North East, who are working together to raise awareness of active travel initiatives in the region and help counter the growing problems of obesity and ill health resulting from physical inactivity. The event also hopes to raise funds for Michelle’s chosen charity, the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.
The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation is very prominent in the north east, & focuses on the early detection and treatment of cancer & the clinical trials of new drugs that will eventually beat it.
Michelle’s Ride comprises three alternative bike rides of varying distances of 5, 20 and 40 miles along the beautiful Northumberland coast. The event will be marshalled and will showcase the Coast and Castles cycle route, offering a combination of off-road and quiet road sections. Participants will be able to enjoy the scenery and a picnic will be provided by Sustrans.
In addition to the bike rides, there will be a range of family activities at the Druridge Bay Country Park; including Nordic Walking, bouncy castles, face painting, and trick cyclists. There will also be a number of stalls provided by the events sponsors. All entrants will receive a goody bag, as well as being entered into a raffle to win fabulous prizes, including a new bicycle and other cycling equipment.
Working with the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation will raise the profile of the event. It will also help draw support from Newcastle United Football Club.
Volunteering for this event:- From Catherine Smith, Office manager & Volunteer Co-ordinator NE At the moment I am trying to gather as many people together as possible to help out to make this day a brilliant success. So if you and your group of rangers are free and would like to help please could you let me know?
If there is a particular job you would like to do on the day let me know too, otherwise just letting me know you are free and want to help is fine.
