STARs Liaison Ranger Meeting
Bridge Hotel, Newcastle upon Tyne
July 17th 2007
Present:
Liaison Rangers
Doug Ridgway, John Kirkbride, Phil Goldblatt, Bob Sorley, Stuart Rintoul, Lindsay Perks.
Ranger Ron Dodd,
The meeting was called to plan how the Sustrans Tyneside Area Rangers ‘super group’ (STARs)
would continue following the withdrawal of Doug Ridgway as our overall leader.
NOTES.
- Everybody expressed relief and pleasure that Doug was continuing as Route 72 Liaison Ranger and would be continuing to maintain the web site, to liaise with Sustrans and to be involved in signing and working with local authorities -with support from other Liaison Rangers as required.
- It was agreed unanimously that the STARs must carry on and will continue to thrive.
- The significant change was that, instead of having a single Leader, the group would be run on a co-operative basis with all Liaison Rangers sharing responsibilities for rides, displays, work days etc.
- Since the amount and nature of attention required on our different routes varied it still made sense to continue to assist each other as required.
- If each LR undertook to organise two events/rides per year, in addition to routine maintenance activities, that would mean 12 events. This was a good basis for a strong and varied programme.
- It was up to LRs to provide Doug with information on events to go on the website.
- Promoting and publicising activities and getting rangers to participate would probably require additional personal contact (eg. by phone) to improve attendances and support.
- We all had our individual special skills and interests to support or lead as required in such areas as litter picking, attendance at cycle fora, leading rides, running stands at shows etc.
- There will be some logistical and communication issues to resolve to ensure things go smoothly.
- It was recognised that there would be unscheduled events and “crises” to cope from time to time and we would seek to respond to these cooperatively.
- There are still some aspects where there were differing views, and further discussion will be necessary to resolve these. Example: whether to have a regular programme of events on a given day of each month or have a more flexible ad hoc approach.
- It is important to note that we still have the support of Sustrans generally and Mike Dagley in particular to guide and support our efforts.
- Those present confirmed their principal assignments as follows. Note: some of these differ from what is shown on the last Sustrans listing.
Liaison Rangers
Doug Ridgway NCN 72 Arbea (South Shields) to Newburn
John Kirkbride “ Newburn to Hexham
Lindsay Perks NCN 1 North Shields Ferry to South Beach
Stuart Rintoul “ South Beach (Blyth) to Lynemouth
Phil Goldblatt RR 10 Royal Quays to Ponteland
Bob Sorley NCN 14 Rowlands Gill to Scotswood
Ranger
Ron Dodd NCN 72 Newburn to Newcastle
NB: Further work is required to confirm whether other rangers are active or inactive, whether they prefer to work on their own and to which Liaison Ranger they are assigned.
However, for latest known position, please refer to STARs website.
All at the meeting thanked Doug for his outstanding contribution to Sustrans by bringing STARS into existence in the first place and wished him all the best in his changed role.
These notes have been circulated round and approved by all those attending the meeting.
