Reconstructed Gatehouse at Arbeia - South Shields
From Ovingham Bridge NCN 72 joins the off-road cycle path on the south bank of the Tyne to Hagg Bank, where it crosses the river on the Hagg Bank (Points) Bridge (a fore runner of the Tyne and Sydney Harbour Bridges).
Continuing off-road on the Wylam Waggonway on route to Newburn where it continues down river on a mixture of riverside promenades, railway paths and purpose built cycle tracks.
At the Royal Quays - North Tyneside it returns to the road until the Shields Ferry Landing.
After a short ferry trip over the river to South Shields the route is at first on promenade then on-road to Arbeia Roman Fort where Hadrian's Cycleway finishes. There is an alternative finish at Tynemouth.
