Hadrian Road to Neptune Road

168.5 Pass Hadrian Road Metro Station (R) on segregated cycle path and at the roundabout cross over to south side of Hadrian Road then right over Davy Bank back onto SCP. Through the Red Arch to join off road cycleway (railway path) - cross Swan Hunter access road - left and right following cycleway around car park. Turn right for link to Segedunum Museum. **
  For the next several miles the Hadrian's Cycleway follows the old LNER Riverside Branch railway which followed a route cut high up on the riverbank - this line carried thousands of shipyard workers to & from their place of work each day. It closed in the early 1960's.
Several of the bridges have been removed and at these points the cycleway dips down to cross the roads. Excellent views can be seen across the river.

Hadrian's Wall between Fort and River

Hadrian's Cycleway crosses the Roman Wall at Segedunum, remains of which can be seen on either side of the cycle track, this was a spur wall between the Fort and the River Tyne.
In Roman times this was the lowest point at which the river could be forded.
Wallsend as the name implies was the end of the Wall or more correctly the start !!
Swan Hunters shipyard with its many tall cranes can be seen on the left.

Continue ahead on wide railway path under Benton Way road bridge.
 

You now enter Newcastle Upon Tyne where the route is known as
Hadrian's Way and Hadrian's Cycleway.

Take care to follow signs that have both a bike symbol and route 72 patch.

167.4 Follow path down the ramp and cross over Neptune Road, check for traffic before crossing
Bear right up zig zag ramp and back onto the rail path again.
  Note the Coin & Wheel sculptures on the four corners of the bridge abutments to your left.

Up river to Newcastle

Down river to South Shields and Tynemouth

Opposite the large direction sign - turn right and leave the cycleway - cross straight
over at traffic lights and 100m turn left into Bus Station before Metro rail bridge.
