a potted history
Alwinton is a small but very picturesque village set in the heart of the Northumberland National park and is the gateway to the Cheviot Hills, remote yet said by some to be the most beautiful untouched landscape in the country. This is a small but close community and the local pub, The Rose & Thistle is at the heart of it. Alwinton main claim to fame is the Alwinton Border Shepherds' Show which is held every year in October and is attended by thousands of people. Near to Alwinton in the village of Harbottle is the site of a ruined castle, the castle was an important part of the defences of the English border and was for many years the headquarters for the Wardens of the English Middle March. These men were responsible for maintaining peace, law and order in the turbulent days of Border warfare.

places of interest
Chew Green Roman Fort - The remains of a roman fort can still be seen (via the off-road option) at Chew Green a few miles to the west of the village, the fort was a staging post on a route known as Dere Street which in Roman times was the main road from York to Scotland.

route features
You arrive at Alwinton on a relatively flat minor road which follows the path of the River Coquet to the village. This is where the off road option from Bellingham finally meets up again with the route proper after visiting Chew Green roman Fort nestled further up the valley in the Cheviots. There is a sharp pull up on leaving the village and 1 mile or so of rough track to negotiate before descending into Alnham.
