The section from Consett to Tynemouth
forms part of the
Sea to Sea
Cycle Route

Stockton to South Shields
via
Hartlepool, Durham, Consett
and Gateshead

The more demanding of the four NCN routes
comprising the Three Rivers Cycle Route
in terms of distance and terrain.

Distance 76 miles / 121.6 Kilometres
approx. 83% off road - 17% on road

A gradual climb to Haswell (150m), then descent to Durham.
From Durham a steep climb up the valley side before a
short descent to join the railway path which gradually climbs
to the summit at Lydgetts Junction, Consett (230m).

From Consett gradually descends the Derwent valley to Blaydon and the River Tyne. After the Tyne Bridge there are a few short climbs until Hebburn, then a relatively level ride to the finish at South Shields.

Predominently off-road using railway paths,
cycle tracks or shared use pavements.

There are on-road sections through Billingham, Hartlepool, Gateshead, and between Haswell to Durham,
and also Hebburn to South Shields.

Because of the nature of some of this route it has been split into six sections - each containing sketch maps of the route of NCN 14 through towns and the more complicated parts.

At a later stage NCN 14 will be extended to Darlington.
Guide notes will be added when the section is completed.

The section between Stockton and Hartlepool has been compliled with the aid of several diferent maps - which do not always agree - therefore until I can verify on the ground the route description may not be 100% correct.

If find any errors please advise
so I can correct the notes and maps
