OF STAITHES
This whole area from Bill Quay to Hebburn Quay was once a hive of industrial
activity with
ship building, chemical works, coal mines and railways sidings for the
coal loading staithes.
All this has been swept away to create the landscape you see today.
Follow road around to right and turn first left into small industrial estate
to dead end - turn right through concrete bollards and downhill onto a
short riverside promenade.
PHOTO
There are good views of the River Tyne and Swan Hunters Shipyard on north
bank.
At
end of promenade turn right and up "moderate" hill passing St
Andrews church (R) to the top.
Turn left on cycle lane and straight over at roundabout to continue along
Wagonway.
Alternate
route and Hebburn Town Centre via roundabout as shown on map.
