Shields Ferry to Tyne Dock

Section 4
Maps 8

START OF NCN 14
from
Shields Ferry Landing

Because of the urban nature of this section along the south bank of the River Tyne it follows a
convoluted route in places and can be difficult to follow. Some sections are subject to
change as new housing and CityLink bus route projects are developed.

The signing from the Shields Ferry Landing is almost non existant for NCN 14
apart from two triangular white entry signs at the start of Commercial Road.
Blue NCN 14 signs begin to appear in Jarrow and Hebburn.
After crossing into Gateshead the route is well sign posted as Keelman's Way NCN 14

Therefore full guide notes with sketch maps are provided. These have been split into five pages
and also contain information about landmarks, river crossings and Places of Interest etc.

Cross river links to NCN 72 are also include with links to the Hadrian Cycleway website where appropriate.

From South Shields to Jarrow there are few signs to guide you !!!

The route to Jarrow follows roads - some of which can be very busy
and uses a very varied mixture of Road / Cycle Lanes / Segregated Cycle paths and
Shared use Paths sometimes changing mode quite frequently within a short distance.

Note cycle route mode on opposite sides of the road can be completly different !!
Study the map above carefully.

At top of link span from the South Shields Landing stage turn left then right up to T-jcn with Ferry Street - Alum House PH (L).

Turn right and straight over at roundabout - at next roundabout take 3rd exit into Commercial Road.

Keep ahead on Commercial Road passing The Dolly Peel PH (L) to 1st Roundabout.(Rbt)

Take care the next 4 roundabouts can be very busy and hard to negotiate.
Beware of large lorries leaving the Docks

Take 3rd exit and up to next Rbt - take 2nd exit and join on road cycle lane to next Rbt.

Use Green off road cycle to continue ahead and back onto on road lane again - under rail bridge and follow Green cycle lane to turn right at Rbt. into Jarrow Road.

Ahead on cycle lane - over at traffic lights and bear left to join off road shared use cycle path
